Mortons Neuroma

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease causes inflammation in many joints of the body but particularly affects the smaller joints of the hands and feet, up to 90% of people with this condition will have associated foot problems. The inflammation of the joint can cause deformity of the toes and foot deformity will cause an uneven distribution of pressure as you walk, making you more likely to develop corns, callus and ulcers ultimately pain. Book an appointment to discuss the different treatment options available to you

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis (OA) occurs when the cartilage of joint deteriorates, the bone underneath can thicken, causing pain, stiffness and pain. The foot posture may alter with OA and cause pain from pressures of walking. Although there is no known cure for OA, there are many ways your podiatrist can help you ease the pressure on the affected joints and therefore reduce the pain and increase function which may include footwear advice or orthotics.

Mortons Neuroma is where there’s a thickening of tissue around a nerve in your foot that’s been irritated or damage. Mortons neuroma usually effects the 3rd and 4th toes and can feel like you are walking on a pebble or have altered sensation such as numbness, tingling or sharp pain. There is a simple test the podiatrist can perform to help diagnose mortons neuroma and treatment

Severs Disease

Severs is known as a ‘Calcaneal apophysitis’. It is not a true disease. It can affect children around 10-11 yrs old and they will complain of heel pain when they are walking and may opt out of sports. As the calf muscles contract they pull the calf tendon on the growth plate of the heel bone and cause pain. Prognosis is generally very good. Your podiatrist will be able to identify how best to offer a safe return to activity to minimise recurrence. Your podiatrist can offer simple orthoses, foot wear advice, exercises and advice regarding their sporting activities to get them back to participating safely again.

Painful Big Toe (Hallux Limitus)

Hallux refers to the big toe. Limitus refers to decrease range of movement of the joint. Hallux limitus is the name given to osteoarthritis of the big toe joint. The main presenting complaint is pain and stiffness although some will have a stiff big toe without pain. Having a stiff big toe changes the pressures on the foot and cause pain in other areas of your foot. Non-surgical treatment options can be discussed with the Podiatrist.

Toe Deformities

There are various types of toe deformities depending on the shape of your toes; hammer, retracted or clawing of the toes. These can be caused by genetics; certain foot types making a person more prone to foot deformity. Toe deformities can occur when there is imbalance with the muscles within the foot and leg. External pressure from footwear can also cause toe deformity. Certain neurological and inflammatory conditions can cause toe deformity as well. Book an appointment to discuss the different treatment options available to you.

Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot (Tinea Pedis) is common fungal infection of the foot. One of the main symptoms of athlete’s foot is flaky patches on the skin and itchy white patches between your toes. Sometimes the skin can crack and bleed. If it is not treated, the infection can spread to your toenails and cause a fungal nail infection.

Corns

One of the most common foot complaints. Corns appear in many areas of the foot and can be very painful. Podiatrist specialises in educating you on what a corn is and how it happens. Treatment can provide instant relief as corns can be removed immediately and is generally pain-free.

Hard Skin
(Callus)

Callus are areas of thick skin that can become painful. They are usually caused by areas of pressure such as a bony prominence, foot posture or footwear. Some people are more prone to callus due to their skin type or when we get older you have less fatty tissue in their skin and can lead to callus formation. In a Chiropody treatment the hard skin will be removed to make walking more comfortable, and you will get advice on how to prevent it.

Chill Blains

Chilblains usually appear on your fingers and toes a few hours after you have been in the cold. Chilblains are small, itchy, red patches that usually appear in the winter months as they are reaction to cold temperatures. To find out further information on how to prevent and treat chilblains please book an appointment.

Plantar Fasciopathy

Plantar fasciopathy is one of the most common form of heel pain, caused by damage to the fascia which connects the heel bone to the base of the toes. The role of the fascia is to provide supports to the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber. Plantar fasciopathy can be caused by a sudden change in activity (walking or running), excessive standing, being overweight or a change in footwear as well as tight Achilles tendon can be associated to this pathology.

Heel Pain

Heel pain is a common pathology and many possible causes. The following types of heel pain are not exhaustive but may help you appreciate the complexity of heel pain and why specialist advice can be helpful.

Fungal Nails

Fungal nail infections are common and can make your nail thicker, brittle and discoloured but it is not serious. There are different options to treat fungal nails depending on the severity and these can be discussed in your assessment.

Thicken Nails

Thick nails can become painful if they are left untreated. Thickened nails can occur as a result of trauma such as dropping something on your toe or minor trauma such as repetitive banging of your toe in your shoe. Changes to your nail over a period of time can indicate fungal infection (Onychomycosis).

Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown toenail is when the nail grows into the skin. Your toe can be painful, red and swollen and sometimes become infected. If you are diabetic, it is important you get the ingrowing toenail treated soon as possible. Ingrowing toenails can be caused by incorrectly cutting the nail, wearing tight fitting shoes, or due to the shape of your nail. Ingrowing toenails can be treated conservatively by removing the nail spike or a permanent solution is nail surgery.

An assessment of your foot health with be completed including a vascular and neurological status. This will then be followed by a full standard Chiropody session and finished with a cream of your choice.

NAIL
 & SKINCARE

Musculoskeletal assessment involves a personalised assessment of your needs. I will perform a detailed examination of the problem looking at posture, alignment, range of movement, balance, strength, neuromuscular control, along with specialised tests to isolate structures and formulate a diagnosis. Within this appointment if appropriate a tailored exercise program will be created.

Book this appointment if you feel you would benefit from orthotics and an assessment will be completed. Clients are advised to bring their regular use footwear and also sports/training footwear to this appointment. I would recommend you wear something comfortable that allows for easy movement such as shorts or athletic clothing.

Musculoskeletal
 (MSK)

Following a full foot assessment, if it has been determined custom orthotics are appropriate for you, we can then begin the process of making a insole specific to your feet. During the appointment an impression of your foot will be taken and used along with a detailed prescription to create your bespoke orthotic. To arrange an assessment for bespoke orthotics please book for a musculoskeletal appointment and biomechanical assessment.

ORTHOTICS

A detailed neurovascular diabetic foot assessment, including advice on maintaining healthy feet. This appointment also included a written reports for you and your GP if you wish including your neurological status, vascular status, skin and nail health. The assessment will also include chiropody treatment.

DIABETIC ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT

An ingrown toenail can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, they can also result in infections requiring antibiotic treatment. In growing toe nails can be managed conservatively with regular treatment however sometimes nail surgery is required to provide a more permanent solution and prevent the risk of repeat infection.

Nail surgery involves injecting the toe with local anaesthetic, desensitising it allowing either part or the whole of the nail to be removed. A treatment can then be applied to prevent the nail regrowing.
